Is there a drama queen in your bedroom?

You know the type – the garment that takes up half the wardrobe, refuses to go with anything, and has been waiting for its big moment since 2019.

Maybe it is the sequinned jacket you bought for a party that never happened or that you chickened out of wearing; the dress that requires special underwear, perfect weather, and a very specific invitation. Or the bargain top that looked primo under shop lighting but has never quite made it out of the house.

Meanwhile, your favourite jeans and the same three tops are doing all the hard work and they are becoming resentful.

Meet the leading roles

Every wardrobe has a few dramatic characters:

  • The ‘I am saving this for something special’ outfit – special occasions have come and gone, but it is still waiting backstage.
  • The ‘It was such a bargain’ purchase – a great price, apparently, for something you do not wear.
  • The ‘I will fit into it again one day’ piece – full of hope, but perhaps not very kind to your present-day self.
  • The ‘I really like it, but…’ item – uncomfortable, tricky to style, or always being tugged at or needing adjustment.
  • The ‘I used to wear this all the time’ favourite – once a star, now mostly a memory because its day has come and gone.

Is the Drama Queen unfairly taking up space? Do you still need it in your life, or it is just making a scene from your hanger or drawer?

The wardrobe audition

Pick one item that has been waiting in the wings and give it an honest audition:

  1. Would I actually wear this today?
  2. Does it feel comfortable and like me?
  3. Can I team it with at least three things that I already own?
  4. Is there a real occasion coming up or am I waiting for a mysterious future event?

If you are not sure, give it one last chance on stage: pair it with something that you actually wear, add shoes that you can walk in, and see if the outfit earns a round of applause. Is it still tugging, pinching or demanding a special occasion that might never arrive? Time to give it the kind of exit every diva deserves: a curtain call, a dramatic bow, and a new wardrobe to perform in.

No dramatic break-up is required

You don’t have to stage a dramatic clear-out or banish every unusual piece. Start with one garment and either wear it this week, find a new way to style it, or pass it on. Be ruthless. Your other hardworking garments will thank you for it.

Do this because ultimately your wardrobe should make getting dressed easy and help you feel good in the clothes that you actually wear. The quiet, dependable favourites deserve a break from carrying the whole show.
