Why copying someone else does not work

Have you ever admired someone’s outfit and thought, “I wish I could look like that”?

Maybe you have saved photos on Pinterest, followed stylish women on Instagram, or bought clothes because they looked terrific on someone else, yet when you try the same look yourself, something feels off. The outfit is not necessarily wrong. In fact, it might be beautiful, but it does not quite feel like you.

This is one of the reasons women end up with wardrobes full of clothes that they rarely wear because they are trying to recreate someone else’s look instead of their own, but the goal is not to look like someone else.

We see the finished product

When we admire someone else’s style we do not see the time that they have spent learning what suits them, or the trial and error. We simply see a great outfit and assume that if we buy the same pieces that we will achieve the same result. Unfortunately, it does not work that way.

Your colouring is unique

One of the biggest reasons an outfit looks different on you from how it does on someone else is its colour. What can make one woman look vibrant and healthy can make another look tired or washed out.

For example, a bright, cool pink might be gorgeous on someone with winter colouring, but overpowering on someone needing softer summer colouring. Similarly, a warm camel coat may look sophisticated on one person and dull on another.

Body shape matters too

The same dress can create completely different effects on different body shapes. A style that beautifully highlights one woman’s proportions might feel awkward or unbalanced on someone else.

This does not mean there is anything wrong with your body; it simply means that clothing works best when it flatters your natural shape rather than fighting against it. Understanding which cuts, proportions, and details suit your figure helps you make choices much more easily.

Each person’s lifestyle is different

Your clothing needs to fit your real life. You might admire the style of a woman who works in a corporate office, travels regularly, or attends social events every week, but if your life is completely different, her wardrobe will not necessarily serve you well.

Style is individual

Perhaps the most important reason that copying someone else’s style does not work is that your look or style is a form of self-expression. Even if an outfit suits your colouring and body shape, you still need to feel comfortable and like yourself in it.

Some women love bold patterns and statement accessories; others prefer simplicity and understated elegance. Some enjoy a polished look, while others feel most comfortable in relaxed, casual outfits. Of course, no particular approach is right or wrong.

The goal is not to copy

There is nothing wrong with taking inspiration from others; inspiration can help you discover colours that you like, outfit combinations that you had not considered before, or new ways to wear pieces that you already own. The difference is using inspiration as a guide rather than a blueprint.

Instead of asking “How can I dress like her?” try asking “What do I like about this look and how can I adapt it to suit me?”

Finding what suits you

When you understand your best colours, what suits your body shape, your lifestyle needs, and your personal preferences:

✔️Getting dressed becomes much easier.

✔️Shopping feels less overwhelming.

✔️You make fewer costly mistakes.

✔️Your wardrobe becomes more cohesive.

✔️And perhaps most importantly, you feel more confident because your clothing reflects you authentically.

The women who look well put together are not usually copying someone else; they have simply learned what suits them and this is something that every woman can do.

Would you like to discover your own style?

At Style Sanctuary, I help women understand the colours, styles, and clothing choices that suit them as individuals. The result is a much more useable wardrobe (and usually a slimmed down one, too!) that is more cohesive and much easier to choose from every day.

Remember that the goal is not to look like someone else, it is to look good as yourself and to feel comfortable in your own skin.
